Class Schedule for 2007 and 2008


Sashiko Block of the Month
A new 6-month block of the month program. The first Friday of the month starting Jan. 5th. 10am - Noon      Or, the first Saturday of the month starting Jan. 6 from 10am-12pm (except the first 2 meetings which are from 1-3pm).      Fee: To participate in the program, you will pay $20 each month for your kit. The class fee is an additional $25 per month for each participating month.

 --You'll make 3 Sashiko blocks each month for 5 months, then combine them in the sixth month into a beautiful Japanese wall-hanging.

his is a class to make a traditional Japanese jacket in your own size. There is no paper pattern; you'll cut the fabrics with the instructor based on your body measurements. You'll make the half of your jacket with patchworking, and the other half with Sashiko. A sample will be displayed at the museum shop.             
Fabrics can also be purchased at the shop.


Make Kimono in your size

Using fans as motif, we'll make a patch-worked wall hanging with sashiko stitched on the border. A sample will be displayed at the museum shop.

 
Temari - Japanese Thread ball ( 3½" diameter)

A thousand year old craft from Japan, Temari (thread ball) is a toy ball, and is traditionally given as a gift. The puzzle of the design is mesmerizing, but the concept is elegantly simple. Temari opens up a whole new range of territory for stitchers to explore. Stitches can go in any direction because of the random wrapped thread surface of the ball. You'll learn how to make Temari using a kit provided at the class.

Stop by to see this beautiful quilt made by blue gradation fabrics. This can be displayed on a wall, or be used as a wrap quilt. We are using 2 different panel fabrics, total of 9 different patterns, patchworked with 18 small Sashiko squares.

Sashiko is a very old form of hand sewing technique in Asia, which uses simple running stitches. Come in and learn this simple but effective method from a native.

This is a 3-hour morning class to learn the basic of Sashiko stitching.

In the afternoon, we are making a Kinchaku bag (cute little accessory drawstring bag). It is a handy reversible bag that helps carry all king of personal items, even some snacks for lunch break. All materials will be available at the shop.

A simple cotton cloth drawstring bag is often used for variety of occasions in Japan. It has been one of most useful bags for centuries. Instructions and patterns for these simple bags vary, but with simple instructions, they can be sewn in any size suited to the needs of the user. Students will learn how to transfer the pattern with special tools, and basic skill of sashiko. Materials and tools will be available at the shop.
