Firefighter’s Jacket

Did you know?

Japan’s first fire service was founded in 1629 during the Edo era (1603-1867), and was called Hikeshi. During the Meiji Period (1868 – 1912), when Japan opened its doors to the West, the Hikeshi was merged into the police department.Sashiko Firefighter Jacket

Sashiko technique was used as a practical technique to quilt together several layers of fabric for durability and strength. The thickness of sashiko stitching reinforced cloth so as to help shoulder heavy burdens, protect the body against heat and cold, or weapons; its abrasive surface also tended to harden any skin which came into contact with its knotted surface. Cotton cloth was suited to sashiko as it absorbs water readily. Super-thick, hand-spun cotton threads were used to give body. All the cloth and threads were dyed with real indigo.Sashiko Firefighter Jacket Sample

What is Kofu

“Kofu” originally means “traditional fabric” in Japanese. It has been made out of natural fibers such as silk, cotton and linen, and has been used for Kimono clothing as well as accessories and interiors for hundreds years in Japan. Today, they have many kinds of Kofu which were developed and refined locally and independently in many areas of Japan. Chirimen, Yuzen, Kasuri, Ohshima Tsumugi, Sarasa and Ai are examples of Kofu, which derived from the methods of weaving and dyeing, or from the names of the fabric producing districts.

Why not join in the conversation. If you have not yet received my free original sashiko pattern for this coin purse, why not sign up today as a subscriber and receive the complete details and instructions today.

This type of coin purse is called “Gamaguchi” in Japan. “Gama” means “frog’s mouth”. Yes, it just looks like a frog opened up its big mouth when you open up the purse! A tiny gamaguchi is useful as a vanity case, accessory case and a stylish inner bag besides just putting loose coins. I carry around my thimbles with this purse.

You might be wondering about this particular purse frame I used in the sample photo. The frame was imported from Japan and its antique finished gold makes this frame so noble and valuable. I like its quality and simplicity of design.

As you can see below, I have arranged for you to be able to purchase this particular purse frame.
